Ofsted & Performance Data

Ofsted Overview

Ofsted is the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills. They inspect and regulate services that care for children and young people, and services providing education and skills for learners of all ages.

Every week, they carry out hundreds of inspections and regulatory visits throughout England and publish the results online. Their goal is to achieve excellence in education and skills for learners of all ages, and in the care of children and young people.

They are responsible for:

  • inspecting maintained schools and academies, some independent schools, and many other educational institutions and programmes outside of higher education
  • inspecting childcare, adoption and fostering agencies and initial teacher training
  • publishing reports of our findings so they can be used to improve the overall quality of education and training
  • regulating a range of early years and children’s social care services, making sure they’re suitable for children and potentially vulnerable young people
  • reporting to policymakers on the effectiveness of these services

Diocesan Inspection Report

All Catholic schools within the Diocese of Middlesbrough are inspected by the Catholic Schools Inspectorate (CSI) under Section 48 of the Education Act 2005. These inspections focus specifically on the Catholic character of each school, looking at the quality of Religious Education, the impact of collective worship and the ways in which Catholic life is lived and celebrated across the community.

The process ensures that schools remain true to their mission of making Christ known while continuing to grow and develop.

St Charles' VC Academy received a glowing report from the Diocese of Middlesbrough’s Catholic Schools Inspectorate (CSI) at the last inspection in 2024, where we were judged as being 'Outstanding'. We are delighted and proud to have been judged so positively for our unwavering commitment to providing an exceptional Catholic education for all of our local children and young people.

Performance Data

SATs are statutory assessments carried out by all state schools.

They assess how your child’s abilities compare nationally with other children in the same year group.

SATs testing takes place at Key Stage 2 (KS2), when your child will take part in National Curriculum tests in English, maths and the spelling and grammar test at the end of Year 6 (usually aged 11).
