Academic Curriculum

At St Charles', we follow the National Curriculum. For more information about the core and foundation subjects and how we deliver them at St Charles, please click the subjects in the menu to find more specific details.

Our school offers children a broad and balanced curriculum and considers the teaching of the foundation subjects, including the Arts, vitally important.

Over the year, as well as the normal curriculum, we have planned in extra themed days for the children to have additional opportunities to explore the wider curriculum and all it has to offer.

More detailed information about each subject area can be found at https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/national-curriculum

If you require any further details, please speak to your child's class teach who will be able to share more specific information about their Year groups curriculum content.

Self Curriculum

As well as the academic curriculum, we pride ourselves in providing invaluable experiences for children here at St Charles' to enhance their personal development along with opportunities to develop their 'Culture Capital'.

At St Charles', we view ‘cultural capital’ as the accumulation of knowledge, behaviours, and skills that a person can drawn upon, both now and in the future to help them be part of modern society. We ensure that children are exposed to a wide range of experiences that will develop their cultural capital and give them an advantage in later life.

For more information on how we do this at St Charles' please click on the 'Self Curriculum' tab.

Reading & Phonics

Reading is a priority at St Charles’ VC Academy and we firmly believe in the 3 Ps of reading

Practice

Reading is taught daily at St Charles.

In Foundation Stage and Key Stage One this is through daily RWInc sessions and the introduction of guided reading in Key Stage One and in Key Stage Two, this is through daily whole class guided reading. At St Charles' we use Ruth Miskin's fantastic Read Write Inc phonics programme from Nursery - Year 2 and where needed, higher up the school. Children then have a phonetically decodable book matched to their RWInc level which they take home to enjoy reading at home with family.

Purpose

Children are given the opportunity to put their reading skills into action through wider curriculum lessons

Pleasure

There are many opportunities to develop reading for pleasure and a love of books at St Charles. Each classroom has a designated reading area with high quality texts which the children can select to read as well as the newly developed library. Doorways to reading as well as Reading Ambassadors are currently in development to further promote reading within St Charles.
